Project Downtown began as a small initiative a few years ago by a few students that were moved by the plight of homeless and needy individuals in downtown Miami. Initially, Project Downtown (PD) was a small scale organization that passed out 30 sandwiches and whatever else could be managed with limited resources, but though the resources were limited, the students’ compassion was not.
What made and continues to distinguish PD as unique is the emotional support provided by those that volunteered. PD not only feeds and provides those in need with daily essentials, but embraces each individual through conversation. Furthermore, the service the students provide is not contingent upon reading a pamphlet or listening to a sermon. To this day, student volunteers have participated in Project Downtown every week for over six years. Although the program has expanded, we strive to uphold the same spirit and ideals the program first began.
When questioned on our motive, PD always answers with a verse found in the Qur’an: "We feed you for the sake of God alone, no reward do we seek, nor thanks." (Holy Qur'an,76:9).
